Awesome freeware! (Or rather, donationware. Donationware basically means this: Pay whatever you find reasonable if you find the software useful)

Makes the screen saver mode on your Mac useful. Status Screen Saver shows you information updates about several things:

  • Adium, Skype & iChat: New/unread chat replies
  • Mail.app: Unread emails
  • Things: unfinished tasks
  • Twitterific: new tweets
  • NetNewsWire: unread news
  • iCal
  • Battery & uptime

And more… Besides from being small, useful and free, the design is simplistic and beautiful, too.

Google Chrome for Mac Will Eat Your CPU

Independent testing by me and my friend: Google Chrome totally eats your CPU.

Not only that, but it will make your CPU hot. My temperature rose from 65° to 76° Celsius within a minute’s use of Chrome. Sex or seven tabs, one with YouTube. In other words, nothing extraordinary. (I’m using a MacBook Pro 17” with 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of RAM.)

My friends’ CPU were almost eighty degrees Celsius hot. (It’s a MacBook 13”, less then a year old). After he quit Chrome, the CPU cooled down to 62°.

How we noticed this: My friend has had general problems with his computer. Strange behavior and random freezing in OS X. He’s been worried about the temperature, and thought that perhaps there could be a hardware problem. Until now, we didn’t think for a second that a web browser could be responsible for this.

Thinking about using Google Chrome for Mac? If so, use it with caution. Check all ongoing processes, the CPU usage as well as the temperature of your computer. (Using the widget iStat is a great way to find this information).

Anyone even knew about this? If not, try it out and see if you experience the same thing with Google Chrome running on Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

A couple of days later, but it is a nice keynote.
